Xtext 2.2 finally brings Maven support for Xtend

I cannot tell how often I was asked since introduction of Xtend2 how to compile them in a Maven build. This was just not possible until now due to the problem that to load and compile an Xtend class it is necessary to compile all of the Java classes that the Xtend class on before, and Java classes might depend on Xtend classes to be translated in order to be compilable.

Xtext 2.2.0 was just released yesterday, and for me the most important new feature is direct support through the xtend-maven-plugin plugin. I could not hesitate to test this feature, and created a small example.

Scenario

I have set up a small Maven project with 2 Java classes and 1 Xtend class that depend on each other.

To translate XtendClass1 to Java code and compile it requires that JavaClass1 is compiled before, and to compile JavaClass2 it is necessary that XtendClass is translated to Java code before.

Maven POM Configuration

I have decided to not use Maven Tycho for this example, and use the typical structure of an Eclipse project with usage of Xtend, i.e. sources in folder /src (instead /src/main/java) and xtend-gen to generate the Java code for Xtend classes to.

Now let’s finally come to the Xtend plugin. The plugin is configured as follows:

The outputDirectory is optional, but leaving it out the sources are generated to src/main/xtend-gen, and we want to generate to xtend-gen in the project root.

The plugin does not define a lifecycle mapping for M2E, which leads to an error marker “Plugin execution not covered by lifecycle configuration”. This is a well known issue when using M2E, and requires some additional work on the plugin. I have opened Bug#366118 for this.

From the output it can be seen that at the end 3 Java classes are compiled, after the xtend-maven-plugin created the Java code for the Xtend class.

The plugin invokes the Xtend Batch compiler through a spawned JVM. The batch compiler is realized in class org.eclipse.xtext.xtend2.compiler.batch.Xtend2BatchCompiler from the newly added plugin org.eclipse.xtext.xtend2.standalone.

After the build XtendClass1.java is generated as expected to xtend-gen. When opening the target folder it can be seen that the plugin produces a Java stub class to target/stubs for the Xtend class. Finally, everything is compiled and the project is clean :-)

Limitation

The plugin only takes one source folder into account, namely the one configured by build/sourceDirectory. This is a problem when you have multiple source folders, which is quite typical for Xtext projects, namely src and src-gen. This is reported as , which is fixed in the meantime. I have deployed a patched version as unofficial release 2.2.2.

Conclusion

I deeply desired this plugin and this finally allows that the xtend-gen folder does not need to be checked in. The sample used here was just simple. Next would be a real life project were I want to apply the plugin, most likely in Project Spray. This project uses Xtend based code generation heavily and Maven Tycho for the build. The project has not been upgraded to Xtext 2.2.0 (of course, it was just released), and I guess we have to upgrade to Xtext 2.2.0 before we can use the plugin. But if this allows us to finally remove the xtend-gen folders from the repository this alone is worth upgrading.

EclipseCon 2011 warmup

EclipseCon is just about to start and I am glad that I can make it this year. I have the chance to present Project Spray on thursday (Nov 3rd, 11:30 AM Bürgersaal 2) together with Jos Warmer. Spray aims to provide tooling to facilitate the creation of visual editors based on the Graphiti framework by the use of Xtext based DSL and Xtend code generator. You can basically compare it with what GMF Tools does for GMF, just with a DSL based approach.

EclipseCon Europe 2011

The project was founded at this year’s Code Generation conference, and Jos contributed an initial state of Spray derived from a customer’s project back in August. Since then the project team refactored the code base quite a bit. We are still in an early project phase. Most of the development is done in spare time yet, like Open Source projects often start. That was quite tough besides my full packed work schedule. Many hours on train or evenings in the hotel were spent to push this project.

At the moment I am just about to release version 0.3.0 of the Spray SDK, which I will use for our demo on thursday. Of course we want to gain a large audience. I am honest enough to say that attendees won’t see a production ready tool yet, but of course it is in working state. Jan announced a pie fight for visual tooling, I am ready to open my mouth wide enough to catch the incoming pies.

For our session we don’t want to start any discussion on graphical editing vs. visualization, whether GMF is better than Graphiti, or DSL / code generation vs. framework approach. There is always a niche for everything, and we are confident that Spray fills one of these gaps.

Besides what an end user actually can do with Spray at this moment there are quite some hidden gems in the project. I am using Spray to have also a non-trivial example for Eclipse Modeling tooling. You will find, for example

At EclipseCon I will take the chance to exchange with some experts in the fields of Modeling, especially Xtext and Graphiti. I will lay another focus on Build systems, especially Maven. Besides that there are many other interesting talks, far more than I can attend. And not to forget to meet all the other Eclipse enthusiasts. See you there!

Xtext 2.0 / Xpand 1.1 plugins available as Maven artifacts

It’s now one week after release of Eclipse Indigo, and with that Xtext 2.0 and Xpand 1.1. For those who use Maven without Tycho to build projects using these frameworks it is of course necessary to have all related plugins available in some Maven repository.

With the help of the osgi-to-maven2 project I was now able with some tweaks to create the necessary POMs and deploy scripts for the plugins. What osgi-to-maven2 basically does is to analyze the plugin manifests and create POMs for them including dependencies. The project is not maintained at the moment and has a problem especially with the parsing of the plugins org.eclipse.ui.views and org.eclipse.ui.workbench, which have some strange directives in the Export-Package section where I could not find documentation about. The underlying manifest parser from Springsource (com.springsource.util.osgi) vomits when parsing those manifests, and also upgrading to the latest release does not help. Time to open a bug.

Also the osgi-to-maven2 tool does not handle absent optional libraries so far.

Based on the deployed plugins it should be possible to setup a plain Maven build for Xtext 2 based projects.

Eclipse DemoCamp Dortmund – November 30th at FZW

The Eclipse Foundation announced a new DemoCamp series for November 2010, and of course we will join the event series with a DemoCamp in Dortmund again. The FZW was a really nice location last time and thus we booked it again. There is enough parking space and also the central railway station is just a 5 min walk away.

Last time over 60 persons joined the Dortmund DemoCamp, making it one of the larger of its sort of the past Helios DemoCamp series. I hope that we will have again so many attendees.

At the moment I am searching for some exciting Demos about different areas of Eclipse. I am happy to have Marcel Bruch talking about his “Eclipse Code Recommenders” project. I met him on Frankfurt’s DemoCamp last November and on Darmstadt’s DemoCamp in July. Not only that the topic is rather amazing, Marcel is an excellent presenter.

Last month I met Ekkehard Gentz in San Francisco at Cafe Mason. He was presenting at the Blackberry DevCon, whilest I had a project in the Bay Area at this moment. I already wanted him for the last DemoCamp talking about his RedView project, but last time it clashed with another DemoCamp. I was not aware that he is so deep in Blackberry development now and was really impressed what he has done for this customer in the mobile area. He will definetely be an enrichment for the camp.

The next interesting topic in the line is CDO. Eike Stepper gave me the recommendation for Stefan Winkler, and Stefan was so kind to do the CDO demo. Stefan is a long-time CDO committer and he will also present CDO at the Eclipse DemoCamp in Bonn. I am also very interested in CDO and introducing it in a customer project for a RCP/JavaEE application with Teneo/Spring/Hibernate stack.

Although I myself entered a demo of my current topic – Building Xtext projects with Maven – I hope to find enough topics from different areas. As organizer I am not unhappy to make place for other presentations. So if you have a good idea, just add a proposal on the DemoCamp’s Wiki page.

I am also very happy that Ralph Müller from the Eclipse Foundation will join the camp again. It is always a pleasure to have him as representative from Eclipse at the camps and this is also the rare chance to speak about Eclipse strategic development from first hand.

Tycho slides uploaded

Yesterday I gave a presentation about Maven 3 and Tycho for the Dortmunder Vortragsreihe, a public event series from itemis. A similar talk I gave at the JAX 2010 conference last week, but with less presentation time and thus a less content. I worked on learning about Tycho now quite a while and some bugs and the current lack of documentation led to some restless evenings in the hotel. At the end I wanted to have a continuous build for a non trivial RCP application build. As the example project I wanted to build I took Kai Tödter’s MP3Manager RCP sample project. Finally I got the project building with Tycho. There are still some issues, especially with the product export. I will use this project now to create situations that show bugs and report them to the Tycho team. They are working really hard at the moment to improve Tycho, and I’m sure that many issues will be resolved soon.

Anyway, the slides that I used yesterday were just uploaded, and I hope they will be useful to get started with Tycho.

Prototyping a Configuration Toolkit for Eclipse SMILA with Xtext

I got the chance to get a bit more familiar with Eclipse SMILA and started development of a configuration toolkit with Xtext. Target is to develop a prototype which enables an easier setup of a valid SMILA configuration by use of a textual DSL with all the benefits which you get from using such a DSL, like semantic validation, content assist etc. SMILA is configured by a bunch of XML files conforming to defined XSDs. Sometimes information is spread around different configuration files, and misconfiguration leads to runtime errors or even to no error at all.

But lets start with SMILA first…

What is SMILA about?

SMILA is an extensible framework for building search solutions to access unstructured information in the enterprise. Besides providing essential infrastructure components and services, SMILA also delivers ready-to-use add-on components, like connectors to most relevant data sources. Using the framework as their basis will enable developers to concentrate on the creation of higher value solutions, like semantic driven applications etc.

To give a rough imagination: You can configure different kinds of agents which search media for information (e.g. files, web pages etc.), and relevant data is extracted from those resources and published to some queue (ActiveMQ is used by default). Listeners react on entries and execute BPEL processes to process the information. Final goal is to index the data in stores, which can be searched by clients. Lucene is used by default as indexing engine.

Getting SMILA running

The SMILA project provides distributions for Windows and Linux. Since I’m working on a Mac I could not use them. So I followed the development guideline to setup a dev environment. In my fresh workspace I checked out first the trunk, but switched back to tag 0.5-M3 to have the same state as the distributions.

After finishing the checkout I finally was able to follow again the good 5 Minutes to Success tutorial. But don’t expect you can finish the tutorial in 5 minutes ;-) One word to mention: SMILA requires Java 6, and my development IDE is started by default with Java 5. So I needed to configure Java 6 for my target platform and also had to add the RCP delta pack, since 1.6 requires 64 bit libraries on Mac.

Contained in the sources is a example configuration project SMILA.application, which can be started by a launch configuration in the SMILA.launch project. Here is a small screenshot of the SMILA.application project structure.

The application contains several XML configuration files and their XSDs in a structure which reflects the plugins that are used. The tutorial explains small changes to the configuration and which files have to be changed, but for setting up a brand new project it might become more complicated if one is not familiar with the structure.

Starting the prototype

First I have to make clear that the following is early development state. I plan to extend the functionality when getting some time again. Since I’m involved often at customers I cannot tell how fast I progress now. At least I get the possibility to spend some days in the near future on it, so I’m expecting to have something useful in the near future.

I created the Xtext projects for the SMILA DSL and added some first rules. After running the MWE workflow Xtext generated the project infrastructure.

When looking at the example project I recognized that a normal project setup would require copy/paste of an existing one and changing some files. Therefore extending the generated project wizard seemed to be a good starting point. The extended wizard now lets you set up a SMILA application with all the required files.

After finishing the wizard a project in the workspace is created. All static resources (esp. project structure and XSDs) are copied from the UI plugin into the new project and as a start some files are generated using Xpand with the information filled in into the wizard.

The wizard generated from the SimpleProjectWizardFragment was not so extensible for my case as it should be, so I had to copy some code from the generated classes and provide a manual implementation with some copied code. I think the fragment could be changed easily to improve and I will set up a change request on that later and post it to bugzilla.

At the moment the project wizard generates the following artifacts from the information provided on the pages:

Crawler configuration

The first configuration I targeted to describe with the DSL is the configuration of the FileSystemCrawler and FeedAgent. This is pretty straight forward, nearly 1:1 mapping. Here’s an excerpt from the appropriate configuration file “feed.xml” shipped with the example:

And here the same situation described in the DSL (the box with “caseSensitive” is there because I pressed CTRL+SPACE after the keyword “recursive” and the content assist proposes that “caseSensitive” could be entered here):

I decided that the record attribute name (in XML the Attribute#name property) can be omitted in the case that it matches the File attribute name, which I think often will be the case. Only if the names don’t match a mapping has to be done. Here the example is

“FileExtension” is the File attribute name and “Extension” is the name of the Record attribute.

Flags are added in brackets and are optional (key, hash, attachment).

Builder Integration

Since Xtext Helios M4 a builder infrastructure was added to Xtext. I leveraged this infrastructure to generate the resulting configuration files on-the-fly when you save the DSL model. So if you, for example, add an “Include” line to your model the respective crawler config is automatically changed. Even better: When you rename your crawler, let’s say from “file” to “userdir_scanner” the configuration file “file.xml” gets deleted from your workspace and is replaced by “userdir_scanner.xml”!

This is just the start of this project and many things have to be done now. I plan to use this project also as a good example for using the Xtext features properly, of course open sourced. Also I have to learn more about SMILA and the appropriate configuration. I’m in exchange with Sebastian Voigt from brox, co-lead of the SMILA project. With his help I think this project can be a valuable contribution to SMILA later.

Here are some features that I want to add to this project:

  • Complete language for covering the tutorial
    In a first step at least everything that makes up the “5 Minutes to Success” tutorial should be possible to describe in the DSL and the configuration files should be generated from that description.
  • Integrate existing configuration files
    I saw that some configuration files might not be worth to be mapped to a DSL and might be better left just in XML for editing. One example is the QueueWorkerConnectionConfig.xml, where the available brokers are defined. Of course from the DSL I want to refer to brokers at several places and I need to get them from this file. My first idea is here to use generate EMF models from the XSDs using the XSD importer. That makes it possible to reference types from that schema directly in the DSL. It should be like normal integration of existing Ecore models.
  • Validation
    One of the major benefits that the DSL can provide is the ease to add validation on the models. Especially consistency constraints make sense, for example to prove that every queue where records are routed to must have a listener that processes that records further.
  • JDT integration
    In the BPEL configuration files services are invoked. The services are qualified by their class names and parameters that can be passed correspond to properties. At Eclipse Summit 2009 Sven Efftinge and Sebastian Zarnekow showed a nice integration of Xtext with JDT to add content assist and validation on qualified Java classes.
  • Product build
    The complete bundle, SMILA and the Configuration toolkit, should be available as a ready-to-use product. I’m planning to use Maven Tycho for setting up the build process.

These are just some few examples of what I can imagine for the future. I hope that I find or get some time to realize this.
